Some Documentation on Machine Knitted Stockings

In 1589, Rev. William Lee invented the first knitting machine, which made coarse worsted stockings. Disappointed in the quality, Queen Elizabeth refused to grant a patent for it, saying, “I have too much love of my poor people who obtain their bread by the employment of knitting to give my money to forward an invention that will lead to their ruin, bay depriving them of employment and thus make them beggars.”
She offered this suggestion, “Had Mr. Lee made a machine that would have made silk stockings, I should, I think, Have been somewhat justified in granting him a patent for that monopoly, which would have affected only a small number of my subjects.”
In 1598, Lee made a machine for silk stockings. The Queen was pleased with the results, but still declined to issue a patent. It took nearly seventy years and the English Civil War before Oliver Cromwell chartered the machine-wrought hosiery trade in 1657.

Some history: A pocket nutmeg grater was formerly a common gift at Christmas and on other occasions of festivity, also made in the 18th century in small fancy cases. The systematic production of nutmeg graters began in the late seventeenth century. A revolution in manners then gripped colonial America, as sophisticated Britons on both sides of the Atlantic began serving punch -- a brew of rum or brandy, fruit juice, sugars, and water laced with grated nutmeg (& other spices)... then a nutmeg grater became an essential addition to the 'punch equipage.'
